Nikon D4s vs Nikon D4 – What’s the difference between the two DSLR cameras?
Welcome to a Battery Grip specialist of the Canon Battery Grip
Nikon D4 is a DSLR camera that came to the market in 2012 and its direct rival was the Canon EOS 1D X, both devices being used mostly by journalists to capture great shots in any light condition. Now, there is a successor that follows in the footsteps of D4 and we’ll see what improvements were made to the Nikon D4s model.
The D4s is almost identical to its predecessor, but it has some minor modifications: textured rear joysticks so you can grip it more easily. The dimensions were retained at 160×156.5×90.5 mm and they both weight 1180grams, but somehow, the new model appears to be less robust and heavy. The design hasn’t changed much and both cameras have the same LCD monitor sized at 3.2inches, sharing a viewfinder with 0.70x magnification.
The D4s comes with the Expeed 4 image processor, which is able to double the low-light capabilities, thanks to the max ISO of 409,600. The D4 came with an Expeed 3 image processor with ISO max of 204, 800. As for the frame sensor, it’s the same as the one from the previous camera: 36.0×23.9mm, with a resolution of 16.2MP. Fortunately, the battery with such as Canon BG-E2 Battery Grip, Canon BG-E3 Battery Grip, Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip, Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip, Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip, Canon BG-E8 Battery Grip, Canon BG-E9 Battery Grip, Canon BG-E10 Battery Grip, Canon LMK-5D Battery Grip, Nikon BP-D60 Battery Grip, Nikon EN-EL9 Battery Grip from the previous device was replaced with a better one, so with the D4 you can take over 3000 shots in single-frame mode, after a full charge, thanks to the EN-EL 18a Li-Ion battery, while the D4 allows you to take an average of 2600 shots. As for the shooting speed, the D4s has a max speed of 11 FPS, with 1 FPS more than the D4.
Both cameras support image formats such as 12 and 14-bit raw, JPEG normal, fine, basic, and TIFF, but in addition, the D4s supports now size S when it comes to 12-bit format. While these cameras are perfect tools for journalists, the autofocusing system is very important, and both devices come with the Advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX AF sensor that has 51 points (3D Tracking, Auto Area Focus). As a novelty, the D4s performs group area AF.
Unfortunately, the resolution wasn’t increased from 1920x1080pixels, and both devices can record at 30/25/24p, but a small improvement was made to the D4s, which can shoot up to 50p and 60p, and can use the multi-area mode Full HD D-Movie which has three options: FX, DX, 2.7X, and 2.7X Crop. The new model, as well as its predecessor, can record directly to the memory card and an external recorder and there’s the possibility to view the simultaneous live view output, so as the record video using a HDMI cable.
